It's Monday, which means I'm going to hold off on some good player tips for your respective upcoming drafts until tomorrow... I have a case of the Mondays.
But I will say that I've been giving a lot of thought to showing allegiance to my New York team, and while you may not be a Giants fan, online shopping is fun and easy! and dangerous. But hey, it's Monday. go crazy.
A good side project to dip your toe in the proverbial water of fandom is to go on eBay and look for a good vintage t-shirt of a football team you might like. They're probably a lot softer than those free shirts you get at conferences and such.
The Southeastern Conference (SEC), made up of 12 universities in the US that are crazy about their football, recently stated that no one (including fans) could publicly broadcast accounts of football games from the stadium. What does that mean? No one can write anything in a blog, no one can post a video to YouTube, no one can tweet about a great end zone catch.
Yesterday the SEC ironically went back on its policy via Twitter. It does raise an interesting question that first started with the rise of blogs and its impact on news reporting - what happens to sports broadcasting when anyone - all 50,000+ fans in a stadium - can comment and stream footage from a game to the public?
Other Fodder
I haven't mentioned that I do love me some good gossip, so fair warning to the readers out there - I hope you don't mind posts on the juicier tidbits I find out there on the world wide web. I am, after all, unapologetically a girl who loves pop culture.
So here are a few good news items this morning:
Michael Jackson's doctor will be charged with manslaughter - boy is that guy in trouble
Similar to Favre's indeciveness, Sean Penn's wife files for divorce... again
Britney Spears' publicist continues to do a kick-ass job of promoting her client
Penelope Cruz is most likely pregnant
Selfishness
Selfish kind of rhymes with shellfish, which sometimes makes me sick.
The New York Times' Fifth Down blog has a good post today about Favre. In author KC Joyner's words:
So to summarize, Favre is a player with an abundance of selfish reasons for wanting to return, isn’t terribly motivated by winning, has declining skills and may not be the best teammate (ask Thomas Jones and Kerry Rhodes). Take all of those away and I’d be really happy to see him come back.
One of you wrote me saying that Minnesota's chances of winning a Super Bowl have now gone from 1 in 25 to 1 in 12. Do you think that's true, especially after what KC points out about Favre's lack of vertical passing ability?
There is also the adding-insult-to-injury aspect of this whole thing: Favre used to play for the Packers, and now he's going to one of their biggest rivals, the Vikings. Ouch.
Ladies, this weekend, you have Vick and Favre to chat about with members of the opposite sex. Use some of the points I've outlined above, in articles I've mentioned, and in previous posts to weigh in on the situation.
And for those of you who are getting ready for your respective drafts, next week I'm going to offer up some good sleeper picks to have in your back pockets for later draft rounds, as well as let some other people talk about their drafting strategies.
